“Brian Blade is a monster from the planet Funkatron!” – Me
The new Black Dub album came out on Tuesday and it’s fantastic. I was a little apprehensive at first because I didn’t know how they were going to capture their huge live sound. Then again I wouldn’t put anything past Daniel Lanois… on a side note, go buy Neil Young’s album Le Noise produced by Lanois. Black Dub has a couple real standout songs on it (Surely, Caanan and Silverado) but the drumming of Brian Blade takes this record over the edge. The opening track, Love Lives, is built around his groove and never lets you leave that warm groove pocket, granted I’m biased because I’m a drummer. Though Blade combines a lot of different styles on the album there is always an undertone of the dance hall music that inspired this group. It was a really refreshing listen and I highly recommend it.
On a side note, one of my favorite bands, Everest, is on tour right now with Matt Costa and they are posting their live shows for free over at their website. I don’t expect you to listen through all of them but I would check out their set from Cleveland. The tour will be at the House of Blues in Anaheim in November if you are interested in some good live music.
